This volume was recommended to me as a sort of "literary science-fiction"

This volume was recommended to me as a sort of "literary science-fiction", a high-brow version of the usual SF novel. Thankfully, it wasn't so much "high-brow" as it was competent and ambitions. Whereas science-fiction authors often attempt to describe new realities with details that make this reality more vivid, Gene Wolfe manages to make things even more vivid by doing the exact opposite. Forget exposition, you won't find much of it; instead, you will find yourself desperately seeking clues and hints that will give you a tentative grasp on what's going on and where you are.
So where are you? These three novellas - and yes, I had been under the impression that this was a single novel, but more on that later - take place on two planets, Sainte Anne and Sainte Croix, previously colonised by the French, with Sainte Anne potentially still inhabited by its former people, the Annese, an evasive race of shapeshifting beings who might have imitated the human colons to the point where they have become them and forgot about it. This idea is known as the Veil Theory in the book, and it will keep you wondering.
As mentioned above, the book is divided in three parts, each is a novella, and each has a very distinct style. I will admit right now that the first part had me going and the unexpected end of that first novella had me quite frustrated. The first part is a memoir about the narrator's childhood and later years, in a world that made me think of New Orleans (colonised by the French, French names everywhere, slavery is a thing, the narrator lives in a brothel, that his father runs, etc). The style fits the story, in that it is a thing of the 19th century, and made me think that people confused "great prose" with "not using contractions". But once you get the mood of the story and its setting, it fits perfectly. As to the writing, it is indeed excellent without being so stylish as to draw attention away from the story.
Wolfe keeps you guessing, and that made this entire book an exercise in curiosity and imagination, which I alternately found fascinating and obnoxious. To be specific, the first part, the memoir, I enjoyed tremendously. As you read, you piece things together and you make sense of the obscure. Very satisfying without dispelling the haunting atmosphere of that world (that stays with you after the book is read, I guarantee).
The second part, however, is when things turned sour for me. The narrator is different (in more ways than one) and that story was designed to be obscure in the highest. I absolutely detested it originally, especially since I had expected the first part to be the whole novel. To have this memoir stop and be forced to read that new story instead, it left me very disappointed, especially when I realised it wasn't just some dream of a few pages. I expected to go back to the first narrator any time, but it never happened. So I say: be aware that this is a collection of three novellas, not a novel. The second story redeemed itself gradually, although the ambiguities there are massive and the myriad characters quickly made me stop trying to remember who was who to a certain degree. As a story of prehistoric alien tribes, however, it does manage to get its otherness across. It remains my least favourite novella of the three, and it won't make much sense until you're done with the whole book, and have asked Google a few questions about the whole thing. A sea of confusion will easily conceal important elements (I somehow missed a whole spaceship). If you've ever wondered what Hemingway's Iceberg Theory would look like applied to science-fiction, there you have it.
The third part is a mix of taped interviews, diary entries, and the mundane activities of the officer listening and reading both. This novella is about as enjoyable as the first, though much less structured, by design, and a lazy reading will make you miss the point entirely (stopping at the wrong moment and letting the book rest for weeks is not a good idea with this one).
Questions of identity abound in these 3 stories, whether it's about an artificial intelligence unable to tell whether it's actually conscious or not, or aliens whose evolutionary winning weapon is to become the other to the point of forgetting one's original nature, nobody knows who they really are and memory is a flickering thing. Again, this keeps you on your toes too, and you get lost in conjectures about everything you read. That alone makes this book unique in my short experience of science-fiction.
If you can brace for the second novella and its idiosyncratic ways, I highly recommend this volume. There is a richness in these stories (though I'm thinking more of the first one) that will haunt you. The mood is masterfully set and the unusual nature of these colonial worlds, the little you actually get to know of them, will stay with you, as you keep wondering.
PS: I can't choose a title for this review. My first sentence was taken, and adding a new one doesn't change the title, it's still the old first sentence. Sorry about that.
